Useful Terms

Cover
Thick paper that protects a publication and advertises its title. It is sometimes referred to by page eg. outside front, inside front, inside back, outside back.
Finish
Generally refers to the surface characteristics of paper – gloss, silk, matt, uncoated. It can also be used as a general term for trimming, folding, binding and all other post-press operations
Finished Size
Size of product after production is completed, sometimes called trimmed size.
Flat Size
Size of product after printing and trimming, but before folding.
Four Colour Process Printing
Colour printing by means of the three subtractive primary colours (cyan, magenta, yellow) and black superimposed; the colours of the original having been separated by a photographic or electronic process
Laminate
A thin transparent plastic sheet (or coating) applied to usually a thick stock providing protection against liquid and heavy use. Can be matt or gloss in finish.
Pantone Colours
A set of standard colours for printing, which is specified by a single reference number eg. Pantone 186C. You can buy a Pantone swatch book containing samples of each colour. It provides a consistent reference point for designers and printers.
Paperweight
Weight of paper which is measured in grams per square metre – GSM/gm2
Perfect Bind
To bind sheets that have been ground at the spine and are held to the cover by glue.
Saddle Stitch
Saddle Stitch refers to a finishing process, where the sheets of paper are folded and secured by applying staples along the fold to produce a book format.
Spot UV Coating
Liquid applied to a printed sheet, then bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. It is often used to highlight images or logos throughout a printed item.
Text
In reference to a brochure, this is the inner part of the document which is usually specified as a lighter weight of paper to the cover.
Wiro Binding
Similar to comb binding but using metal wire instead of plastic.
